Red Ribbon Week
by: PGK Dave Melander

As you know the purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to display red ribbon as a symbol of the community's commitment to a drug-free healthy lifestyle. Our goal as Knights is to help support that effort and to heighten peoples awareness of the drug problems we face and to encourage children and adults alike into action to help build a drug-free Pleasanton.

Thanks to the Knights and their family members, and to the St. Augustine Middle School Youth Community and Youth Minister Kevin Staszko for joining people of other churches , and civic organizations in putting up and taking down ribbon to support this effort. Special thanks also to the Faith Formation staff of St. Augustine and to Father Dan Danielson for providing a Youth Mass where the issue of addiction and recovery was addressed. Also addressed was the important message that those who suffer from the illness of addiction have a place in the Church, and receive support and compassion as they struggle for recovery.

"If just one child in Pleasanton...understands the message and abstains from drugs, the campaign is more than worth it" (slogan for Red Ribbon Week, Pleasanton).

Dear Brother Knights

It is with great joy that I congratulate you on all your good works as we end this last year of the century, a century of dedication to our order. Our numbers are growong and growing, recently reaching 1.6 million knights. To be a knight is to pick up the cross and never put it down. I picked up the cross in 1986 and have never regretted it. Over the years I have seen many of my brother knights go to their final reward, their good deeds never forgotten. Our Order means friendships never forgotten...worshipping in all sincerity...praying for the sick...showing our Priests that we are here to help...helping the Pope in Rome in any way we can. We will carry these into the new millenium.

I would like to thank the many Brother Knights who have so willingly contributed their time to help with the Donut Socials. It has been a very great success, and is always well attended.

God Bless You, and I would like to wish you and your family a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Richard R. Garcia, PGK
