At the business meeting
last month, I witnessed the K. of C. at its finest. We
are a group of Catholic gentlemen organized to honor God
and His Church, and to help those in need, with
particular emphasis, within our own parish. We have
pledged, particularly, to be of assistance to our clergy.
An outstanding example
of this played itself out that evening. Our chaplain, Fr.
Tony, was present. He told of an upcoming celebration to
welcome groups in the parish and in particular to invite
and welcome newcomers, and people not belonging to our
parish at present. It is to be an "open house"
of sorts with a number of activities planned. A real
chance to show off the Catholic Community of Pleasanton.
He needed food
prepared and served for an expected crowd of a thousand -
no small task! After some clarifying questions and
discussion, Mike Machi, Jr. eagerly volunteered to take
on the job. A number of fellow Knights immediately
offered to help him.
All seemed settled.
Then Fr. Tony revealed there were no outside funds to
cover expenses. The disappointment among the Brothers was
palpable. After a few moments of seeming despair, the
discussion again became lively, but the desired solution
seemed impossible. The strong will to help in this good
cause, and to find a way , somehow, for the Knights to
again come through and respond to a plea from our clergy
to serve our parish, was absolute in the mind of each of
the twenty-five or so Brothers present. Many avenues were
explored but ran into severe roadblocks . God heard the
unspoken prayers of all the men present and put the idea
for a workable plan into Bro. Brad Schieferstein's mind.
It was enthusiastically approved by all. What a great
feeling of pride I felt being associated with 'these men
they call Knights'!
